100 BOOTS a continuing narrative, is an alternative exhibition which avoids the tradition of a gallery's white walls and reframes a work as it exists; out in the world, in the hands of others. When Eleanor Antin first began her journey with 100 BOOTS, she had also recently embarked on a journey of her own. In 1968 Antin moved across the country, from New York to California. Miles from the galleries and art community she once knew in New York City, Antin created an artwork which integrated its own alternative exhibition strategy as a key aspect of its making. 30 years later, the work continues to change hands, traveling around the world and back, from artists to galleries to museums and collectors. This particular collection of the 51 postcards resides in San Francisco, California where it is shared, stored, and occasionally exhibited as it continues the ongoing performance of 100 BOOTS today. The images below, staged and documented in a manner similar to the original 100 BOOTS, replace exhibition walls with exhibition images which suggest and exaggerate the playful manner in which the artwork as a series of objects continues to perform through it's travel and trade.
